How Margot Robbie’s Skin Became Wallpaper in ‘Wuthering Heights’

“Wuthering Heights” production designer Suzie Davies was excited to get a call from Emerald Fennell, since she’d worked on period dramas from this era before — not to mention on Fennell’s lavish “Saltburn.”

“I thought it’d be fun,” Davies says. But Fennell had a different vision for adapting the Emily Bronte classic. Not only did she want the world built on sound stages, this was a story told through the lens how Fennell’s experienced the story as a 14-year-old. “That opened the treasure trove for me, and we could go in all different directions,” Davies says.

From building Wuthering Heights to Thrushcross Grange, and even a doll’s house, Davies was in heaven.

Here she breaks down the film’s key sets and why surfaces needed to be moist, reflective and sweaty.

Wuthering Heights

Jaap Buitendijk

Wuthering Heights, which is in Yorkshire, needed a stable, an upstairs and a kitchen. Even though Davies built it on a soundstage, nature still needed to be ever-present.

“That’s why we have a courtyard of rock around the house,” Davies explains. In addition, the arch leading to the house was inspired by Gothic architecture.

Davies raised the set by two feet so she could build a drainage system. “We wanted practical effects. So there are rain rigs punched through the ceiling and there’s a tank underneath.”

She kept the colors of the Wuthering Heights interiors muted and almost bruise-like.

The idea of Wuthering Heights was for it to feel bruised and heavy with a brutalist vibe.

During her research, Davies found the Trefor granite quarry in Northern Wales, which was abandoned and near a “big brutal structure on top of a hill.” Davies says, “It’s got nothing to do with Yorkshire, but it has the essence that Emerald wanted. Once we found that, then we started sort of layering on elements of the Yorkshire vernacular, of those big tiles.” The tiles were wet and shiny. She goes on to say, “There are a lots of modern materials used in traditional ways, and traditional materials used in unconventional ways. Everything’s flipped on its side, just to make the audience feel more uncomfortable.”

Thrushcross Grange

This was the Linton family’s estate, and excessive in every way. It also presents itself as this grand luxurious place, but metaphorically is a prison for Cathy.

The Skin Room

Jaap Buitendijk

When Cathy is introduced to her bedroom, it’s boasted that the walls are like her skin.

Again, it’s an uncomfortable moment for the character.

Davies had swatches and fabrics around her desk. She happened to have a piece of latex. “I think we used it on ‘Saltburn,’” she recalls. It was skin-toned and Davies felt there was something there.

Once she knew she was onto something, Davies asked Robbie to “send high res images of her arms and veins. We printed it. We’ve slightly accentuated her veins.” Davies adds, “We had a go at doing her belly button as well above the fireplace, but that looked a little bit too weird, believe it or not.” The images of her skin were then printed onto the fabric that’s used for the padded wall panels of the bedroom.

Davies adds that at the end, as there’s an overhead shot of Cathy on the bed as she is dying, her veins are prominent. “We printed her veins and everything into the carpet as well, just for that top shot, which is even more weird and uncomfortable.”

The Hands

Jaap Buitendijk

Take a careful look at “Wuthering Heights” and hands are everywhere, whether it’s shots of the actors, or as part of the decor. “There’s something really sexy about what they’re up to and what’s going on,” Davies says.

For the hands above the fireplace, Davies says she took casts of the art department’s hands to make the ceiling roses in the fireplace and in the panels of the library. “We’ve got the shadow puppets that play another subconscious little story going along in on the top of the library. So they’re sort of placed everywhere in the hope that they’re little subconscious things. Some people will see them. Others won’t.”

The Dollhouse

Jaap Buitendijk

The dollhouse was created by the Mattes and Miniatures crew. They built a 1/12th scale version of the Grange. Davies had the model built first, before building and designing the lifesize Thrushcross Grange, flipping her typical design process.

Fennell also had the idea that she wanted the Grange to reflect how Edgar liked collecting things.

In designing the Grange, Davies had a rule that everything needed to be ordered and symmetrical. “The windows are far too big. The doorways are far too big. The ceilings are really high. The ceilings are polished plaster. The floors are polished.”

Davies went to town on the garden. “We had real trees and real flowers,” so it smelled like a real garden.

Sweat

Jaap Buitendijk

If the film looks moist and the surfaces looks reflective, that’s exactly the look Fennell and Davies were going for. “We always wet down those city streets on night shoots to make them look lovely, and we just wanted everything possible to look like it’s sweating.”

In “Wuthering Heights,” Davies and her team rigged water to drip down the rock face and into the house.

At Thrushcross Grange, Davies says, “The skin starts to sweat when she gets ill in the dining room.” She adds, “The baubles are contemporary, plastic spheres that we stuck on the wall in a Regency pattern, but they look like they’re dribbling and falling down the paneling and onto the floor.”

WIne Bottle Tower

As Cathy’s father Mr. Earnshaw continues to drink himself to death, Wuthering Heights starts to show cracks. Two wine towers feature in the kitchen to reflect Earnshaw’s state of mind.

Davies says, “Emerald said, ‘I want a mound of bottles to show, obviously, that Earnshaw is this wreck and ruin, and is drinking himself to death.’” With that directive, Davies built a tower of wine bottles that were five feet high. “She said, ‘No, ten feet high. I just want to see a wave of bottles.’” Davies and her team built in in a way that cinematographer Linus Sandgren could light through it. “The power of that scene when Martin Clunes is on the floor with those two massive green piles of mountains of booze – Everything with Emerald is ‘keep going and maximalist.’”

Colorado Warns of "Heightened" Avalanche Danger During Holiday Weekend

Snow is arriving in Colorado, and for skiers, the excitement is palpable as the long weekend approaches.

At the same time, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) is warning those planning to head into the backcountry that avalanche danger is expected to reach the highest levels seen so far this month.

The weekend danger, the CAIC said, will be most elevated in areas that receive the most snow on Thursday and Friday.

In response, the organization urged travelers to make avalanche safety central to their Presidents Day weekend plans, particularly since time off has historically been prone to avalanche accidents.

Keep reading for more.

The 2026 POWDER Photo Annual is here! Look for a print copy on a newsstand near you, or click here to have a copy shipped directly to your front door.

View this post on Instagram

According to the CAIC, over the past decade, ten avalanche accidents have killed 13 people around the holiday. The organization added that the combination of fresh snow and improving conditions can heighten the risk of a fatality.

Skier demand, too, is especially pent up this winter: across Colorado, the snowpack has plunged well below normal, meaning powder days have been less common than usual.

“Plan ahead, check the forecast, and make sure everyone in your group has the training and rescue equipment needed to enjoy the weekend and get home safely,” CAIC director Ethan Greene advised in a press release.

That includes a few simple steps.

  • Check the daily avalanche forecast at Colorado.gov/avalanche before heading out
  • Avoid avalanche-prone terrain when danger is elevated
  • Carry avalanche rescue equipment (transceiver, probe, shovel) and know how to use it

The wintry weather is part of a broader cycle moving through the West. According to a recent update from meteorologist Chris Tomer, it is set to hit the western and southwestern stretch of Colorado the hardest, with more than a foot of snow falling through February 19.

The Sierra Nevada, in California, though, is also poised for a hammering. Mammoth Mountain has already reported a 24-inch three-day total. Per OpenSnow, another five feet or so could fall there in the next ten days.

Casey Wasserman Remains LA Olympics Chairman Amid Epstein Scandal

Casey Wasserman will remain as the chairman of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics amid calls for his resignation due to his Jeffrey Epstein ties.

The LA28 executive committee of the board — which was hand-picked by Wasserman and includes Jeffrey Katzenberg, Jeanie Buss, Kevin McCarthy and Jessica Alba — held an emergency meeting to discuss Wasserman’s recently revealed relationship with the convicted sex trafficker. The committee, a smaller subset of the 35-person Olympics board, conducted a review with the help of law firm O’Melveny & Myers LLP and put out a statement on Wednesday asserting that “Mr. Wasserman should continue to lead LA28 and deliver a safe and successful Games.”

Wasserman, the founder and CEO of the eponymous Hollywood agency, is under fire after flirtatious emails with Ghislaine Maxwell surfaced in the latest batch of Epstein files released by the Justice Department. Wasserman’s correspondence with Maxwell dates back to 2003, before she was convicted of sex trafficking and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

“We found Mr. Wasserman’s relationship with Epstein and Maxwell did not go beyond what has already been publicly documented,” the Executive Committee of the Board said in its statement. “Twenty-three years ago, before Mr. Wasserman or the public knew of Epstein and Maxwell’s deplorable crimes, Mr. Wasserman and his then-wife flew on a humanitarian mission to Africa on Epstein’s plane at the invitation of the Clinton Foundation. This was his single interaction with Epstein. Shortly after, he traded the publicly-known emails with Maxwell.”

The statement concludes: “The Executive Committee of the Board has determined that based on these facts, as well as the strong leadership he has exhibited over the past 10 years, Mr. Wasserman should continue to lead LA28 and deliver a safe and successful Games.”

Wasserman has faced pressure from talent signed to his agency, with artists like Chappell Roan and athletes like Abby Wambach exiting the company and calling for him to resign. Dozens more clients have severed ties with the agency over Wasserman’s Epstein controversy.

Skier Death Confirmed at Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Mountain, California, has confirmed that a skier died on Thursday, February 5, 2026.

Mammoth Ski Patrol received a call at 1:00 p.m. local time that a skier had suffered a severe fall in ‘Dropout Chute 2’, a Double-Black Diamond, ungroomed slope accessed from the resort’s popular Chair 23.

Life-saving care was administered, and the victim was transported to a local hospital. The skier later passed away from their injuries.

Eye-witnesses reported on Reddit that the accident was the “worst” they had ever seen. The skier allegedly lost their ski and slid head-first into a rock.

The incident marks the third death of the season at Mammoth. Ski Patroller Cole Murphy also tragically passed away in an avalanche in December.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the friends and family of the deceased.

Meet Team USA's Nordic and Cross Country Skiers for Milan-Cortina 2026

Preview

Team USA will be represented in all three major Nordic ski disciplines at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympic Games.

Across the cross country, Nordic combined, and ski jumping disciplines, the USA has 20+ of the country’s most talented athletes. Perhaps most notably, the women’s cross-country team is led by Jessie Diggins, who will be competing in her fourth Olympic Games in Milan Cortina and looking to add to the three Olympic medals already in her name. Diggins, who is the most decorated American cross-country skier of all time, qualified for the Games following the World Cup in Trondheim, Norway, in December of 2025. She’s said the 2026 Milan-Cortina Games will be her last, and she plans to retire in March, after the rest of the World Cup season.

In Nordic combined, Ben Loomis will make his third Olympic appearance for the USA in Milan-Cortina and has been on the national team for 10 years. Loomis is joined by Niklas Malacinski, who is one of the 48 rookies on the US Stifel Ski Team. Malacinski is currently the only American man ranked in the top 30 on the World Cup circuit this year, with four top-20 finishes.

USA ski jumping is represented by a roster of six athletes, five of whom are Olympic rookies. Kevin Bickner, 29, will lead the group into his third Olympic Games. Bickner retired following the 2022 Beijing Games but returned to sport two years later, achieving two personal bests during the 2024-25 season. Alongside Bickner, USA ski jumping is represented by three-time national champion Tate Frantz, 20, and Jason Colby, 19. Colby earned 7th place at a World Cup stop earlier this year, which is the best placement earned by an American male in more than two decades. The three women qualified for Team USA in ski jumping are similarly talented. Annika Belshaw won her eighth national title this season and is the highest-ranked American woman on the World Cup circuit.

Here are the full rosters for Team USA in cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, and ski jumping.

‘Time Hoppers’ Becomes First Muslim-Made Animated Film in Theaters

Six years ago, a low-quality web animation on Muslim Kids TV sparked an idea that would become “Time Hoppers: The Silk Road,” the first theatrically released animated feature made by and for the Muslim community.

The film opens Feb. 7 in over 660 U.S. theaters, marking a milestone for family entertainment and grassroots productions, demonstrating that independent animation can still draw audiences at a time when theatrical releases for the genre face significant challenges.

The animated feature follows four gifted children from the year 2050 who discover the ability to time travel and must protect history’s greatest scientists from an evil alchemist threatening the future of modern science along the ancient Silk Road.

Gabriel Milo, COO of Milo Productions, said the time-travel concept, in which children meet historical figures, first gained traction as a mobile game funded through Canadian production grants. Within three months, it surpassed 100,000 downloads, signaling strong demand for Muslim-centered content.

“For the first time, Muslim children will be able to see themselves reflected on the big screen,” Milo said. “That was something we saw was missing, and we saw a real market opportunity.”

Even as the industry trends away from theatrical releases, the filmmakers believed their audience craved a communal viewing experience. Early social media engagement reinforced that instinct, with requests pouring in from communities around the world.

Rather than rely on celebrity endorsements, the marketing strategy emphasized what Milo called “community credibility over celebrity.” Community leaders, educators and religious scholars were cast in voice roles, including the character Dean Hafsa. That trust-based approach extended to a nationwide network of volunteer “local champions,” who used promotional toolkits to drive ticket sales in their regions.

Shannah Miller, vice president of marketing at distributor Fathom Entertainment, recognized the model’s potential early on. Fathom, which handles roughly 100 specialty releases each year, saw “Time Hoppers” as an opportunity to expand beyond its core faith-based audience, which accounted for nearly half of the company’s revenue last year.

“This was a first,” Miller said. “The content was created by the Muslim community for the Muslim community, and it felt authentic, while still being accessible to a broader audience.”

The partnership between Milo Productions and Fathom proved critical to the film’s rollout. Milo provided data on community demographics and priority markets, while Fathom leveraged its exhibitor relationships to expand bookings and add showtimes as demand grew — sometimes within hours.

“We’d email Fathom, and within an hour the tickets were live,” Milo said.

Originally scheduled at 516 locations for Feb. 7-8, exhibitor demand quickly pushed the release past 660 theaters, with pre-sales outpacing expectations. More than 35,000 tickets have been sold — nearly $500,000 in revenue — with the majority of purchases still expected in the final days before release.

“We’re up more than 35% in pre-sales since Monday,” Miller said. “And historically, 70% of tickets sell in the last 72 to 48 hours.”

For a one-day event built around new IP and an underserved audience, the film’s performance is notable. Its “edutainment” approach is designed to spark curiosity rather than deliver formal lessons, supported by companion workbooks and coloring books developed with historians.

“Our goal is intrigue,” Milo said. “We want kids to ask questions and want to learn more.” Beyond box office numbers, the release reflects the potential for original stories from underrepresented communities to connect with audiences, even as Hollywood relies heavily on established IP.

“Underserved audiences will show up,” Milo said. “They’ll show up for authentic voices that represent them.” While rooted in Muslim history and culture, the film’s broader themes of education, curiosity and pride in heritage have encouraged the community to welcome wider audiences. Fathom supported that outreach with targeted trailer placement and partnerships with exhibitors, including educational tie-ins for school groups.

The model is already translating overseas. In Canada, bookings grew from 15 to nearly 40 Landmark Cinemas locations, covering more than 90% of the exhibitor’s footprint. As “Time Hoppers: The Silk Road” heads into theaters, it arrives amid a rising appetite for animation and stories outside traditional studio formulas. For Milo and Miller, the takeaway is clear: there’s an audience eager for representation, and when approached authentically, they’ll turn out in force.

“This is genuine support,” Miller said. “People are excited to see themselves on screen, and that’s powerful.”
