After 40 years, Enchanted Forest, a cross-country skiing staple in New Mexico near Red River, has announced that it won’t open for the 2026-27 season, citing fickle snow conditions and the cost of liability insurance and other expenses, but owners still believe it could have a second life.
The decision, penned in a letter published by owners Ellen Miller-Goins and Geoff Goins, wasn’t “easy.”
“Enchanted Forest has never been just a business to us. It has been part of our family for four decades, and we know it has become part of many of your families, too,” they wrote.
But they wrote that the last few winters have been increasingly difficult, with the latest being the worst in Enchanted Forest’s history. While they weren’t able to groom the slopes for cross-country skiing at all, they did offer some guided snowshoe trips and yurt stays. That wasn’t enough to sustain the business, though.

A hoped-for sale was meant to keep Enchanted Forest turning the page on a new chapter, but that fell through.
“Continuing even limited operations this winter would require us to take on the considerable cost of liability insurance and other expenses before knowing whether we will have enough snow to operate,” they wrote, noting that they can’t take the financial risk again.
The two hope this isn’t the end of Enchanted Forest, which remains for sale. Established by Miller-Goins’ parents during the 1985-86 season and later bought by Ellen and Geoff in 2010, the ski area spans about 640 acres of Forest Service land on Bobcat Pass, accompanied by yurts, a day lodge, and an established trail network.
Enchanted Forest has also partnered with the Indy Pass, the independent-mountain-focused multi-pass that also includes alpine ski areas.
“Through the years, thousands of you have learned to ski here, brought your children and grandchildren here, stayed in the yurts, snowshoed through the forest, skied by candlelight during the Luminaria Tour, eaten far too many calories at Just Desserts and returned winter after winter,” the letter reads.

They thanked everyone who visited Enchanted Forest and the employees and volunteers who kept it running.
Their letter includes an email for serious prospective buyers or those interested in the future of Enchanted Forest.
